Crosshouse lies on the Carmel Water, two miles west of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, on the old toll road from Kilmaurs to Knockentiber. The village was originally built for coal miners in the early 19th century and was part of Kilmaurs Parish until 1882. Other industry has included the Massey-Ferguson plant which was based at Moorfield until the 1970s. Andrew Fisher, fifth Prime Minister of Australia, was born here in 1862. Crosshouse Hospital is a major employer and is the principal general hospital for East and North Ayrshire.
